AFCON 2023: Côte d’Ivoire beat Guinea Bissau completely to start the AFCON campaign.

The AFCON 2023 kicked off on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, with the Elephant of Côte d'Ivoire beating the African wild dogs of Guinea Bissau 2:0.

Al Nassar midfielder Seko Fofana got the crowd ecstatic with the opening goal of the 2023 AFCON tournament as he pulled the host nation in front in the 4th minute. Fofana’s power on the ball left the Guinea-Bissau defense with no answers, displaying an extremely brilliant capacity to hang onto the ball before striking the back of the net.

Even though they had the lead early on, Côte d’Ivoire showed the potential to have more goals as they had many chances but were stopped by the goalpost. In the first half, the elephants continued to hold their own against the African wild dogs.

The Ivorians, after taking complete control of the game, managed to protect it as they prevented the African wild dogs of Guinea-Bissau from registering a goal. Although Guinean star Mama Blade came close, he wasn’t able to stand the test.

Côte d’Ivoire will be facing Nigeria in their next game on Thursday, January, 2024, as they look to continue their winning form in the tournament. Guinea-Bissau will look to put this defeat behind them and make up with a win against Equatorial Guinea on January 18, 2024.
